Obstacle Overcome French Drain
Due to the grade of the existing bank, and the proximity of the pond to this bank, a French Drain was placed along the edge at the base of the bank to divert water runoff from entering the pond.
Detailed Pictures of the Installation
We had to bring in a backhoe for the digging on this pond. The ground was nothing but heavy clay with dense shale. It would have taken us a week to dig this by hand.
We did some cleanup of the edges and final shaping by hand. Placed and leveled the BIOFALLS® and Skimmer and buried the 3” Flex PVC.
The underlayment and EPDM Liner are now in place and attached to the BIOFALLS® and Skimmer. We put a few rocks on the liner to hold it in place.
Began the artistic work on the waterfall. We also started building the pond walls and edges. The bottom tier of the pond is now fully rock lined with 1-2 inches of gravel.
Here the waterfall is starting to come together.
We disguised the Skimmer opening.
Bring on the water!! We started filling the pond and cutting away the extra liner around the edges.
The most exciting part of the whole project!! We turned on the 7,500 GPH Pump. Pictures just don’t do this waterfall justice. The sound this waterfall makes gives the feel of being in nature.
Pond is full. Filtration started. Added AquaClearerTMBacteria to maintain clear healthy water.
Tested the lights. There are three in the pond and one in the waterfall as you can see here.
The liner is all trimmed. Photocell for the lights is placed next to the skimmer. This is also where the electrical GFCI outlet will be placed. An extension cord is running system temporarily.
This is the view as you round the corner of the garage to enter the back yard.
A close up of the waterfall.
When the pond was complete, and final grading was performed on the bank, we noticed a potential problem. The steep bank in close proximity of the pond edge did not allow for water to run away from the edge of the pond. We opted to put in a French Drain to prevent the water runoff from entering the pond.
We covered the 4" corrugated pipe with with stone and routed it down the side of the house to the front yard.
The customer added mulch to the bank and began doing the landscaping.
A few aquatic plants were split out and moved from their smaller pond. A few more new aquatic plants were also added.
These are a couple of water lilies we moved from their smaller pond. They are planted directly into the gravel on the plant shelf. After being in there for a week, both of them bloomed.
