Summary
This Aquascape Designs Pond was installed at a residence. This is the customer’s first pond and they decide they wanted a fountain instead of a waterfall. The customer chose this concrete lantern and we converted it into a fountain with a 50W up-light shining up through the center to shine out the holes in the side. Sitting underneath the fountain is a completely submerged biological filter.
Obstacle Overcome – Convert Concrete Lantern into a Fountain
We had to drill a 2” hole in the top of this concrete lantern which was 14” thick. We then sealed 2” flex PVC inside the hole and ran the plumbing through the hollow center along the edge. This allows the light to come up from the bottom without seeing the plumbing. We also placed a ball valve on the line coming into the fountain for easy adjustment of the water flow.
Detailed Pictures of the Installation
We marked the layout of the pond and where the fountain was going to be placed
Let the digging begin. We excavated the area to create a plant shelf 10” deep on the yard side of the fountain and brought the viewing side to a depth of 24”. This will allow for better viewing of the fish year round.
Here you can see the location for the submerged biological filtration. On the right side of this picture are the 2 lines coming from the skimmer. One will be hooked up to the fountain and the other to the biological filtration.
This is the top of the fountain. We had to drill a 2” hole through this 14” thick piece of concrete.
Since this concrete lantern was not designed for a fountain, we sealed the concrete for longer life.
The pond is almost done! The fountain is working and we just need to finish the edging.
The customer is planning on doing the surrounding landscaping themselves. They had asked for a walkway between the pond and the house that blended into the pond.
Here is just another angle. This picture puts the path into a little
better perspective.
